Summer officially begins this week and the warm weather is here to welcome us into the new season. Now is the time that Pacific Northwesterners enjoy a break from the rain and can get outside to relax and enjoy the scenery. If you’re looking for some fun summer porch and patio decorating ideas that bring beauty and increase home value, here are some simple ideas to help you get started.
#1: Bring the inside outdoors.
Rugs and throw pillows can work wonders in creating a warm and inviting patio or porch space. They add color and ambiance. In addition, consider adding some umbrellas or curtained areas that can provide both privacy and shade from the scorching summer rays. In addition, if you have old furniture that you may have considered junk, it might be able to be given new life as a piece of outdoor furniture. For example, if you have an old dresser, paint it with a coat of exterior paint and put it to use as a place to pot outdoor flowers, or as a place to serve lemonade or cocktails during your next entertainment event.
#2: Lights, lights, and more lights.
Lighting makes all the difference. Flood lights are important to have for safety reasons, but when it comes to outdoor entertaining or relaxing in the evening warmth, ambient lighting with programmable battery-operated LED candles or twinkle lights are a great option.
#3: Add landscaping.
Landscaping is one of the easiest ways to add beauty to your outdoor space and it can also enhance the value of your home. Shrubs, trees, potted flowers, or fresh flowers that are planted along walkways are affordable ways to beautify your space and increase curb appeal. Group in odd numbers and mix and match colors and shapes to create some uniqueness.
#4: Upgrade windows and doors.
If your home’s doors or windows are old and outdated, they’re likely not energy efficient and could be wasting precious money each month due to leaking air in or out. Replacement windows and doors will add value and beauty in an instant! Not to mention, they can reduce noise and help maintain even temperatures throughout your home, no matter what the weather is doing outside.

Your dining room is a gathering space – the perfect place to entertain guests and to relax with some good food and fun conversations. If you’re planning on updating your dining space and you need the perfect light fixture to help bring all of your interior design ideas together, there are a lot of great options out there to choose from. Whether it’s a grand chandelier or track lighting that add ambiance, it’s important to keep in mind that you’ll want to pick a light fixture that not only provides enough light, but one that complements your overall style and is sized correctly for the room and its furniture. Here are some of the most popular light fixtures out there right now.
Option #1: Chandeliers.
If you have an elegant space that you want to add a touch of sophistication to, a chandelier is a great way to do that, while also adding an instant focal point to the room. Crystal chandeliers are incredibly popular right now, especially for homes that have traditional dining room spaces. Chandeliers with dangling crystals can really accent dark wood floors or trim and they also provide plenty of soft light.
Option #2: Wall sconces.
This type of light fixture is mounted directly on the walls of the home. If you already have enough light for general lighting, wall sconces can be used as an accent feature by installing them into wall corners. They can help create a cozy, more intimate feel to dining rooms, especially when combined with candles.
Option #3: Pendant lighting.
This type of lighting is very versatile and can be incorporated into a variety of décor preferences. Pendant lights hang from a single chain and let off light throughout the room. They can come in bright colors or light shades so you can contrast your décor with the light easily. If you prefer a more traditional style, there are chandelier pendant lights that illuminate the space with classic elegance.
Option #4: Track lighting.
Track lighting is very popular for homes that have modern, contemporary, or industrial design themes. This lighting is very bright and it’s easy to install, either being installed flush to the ceiling or dangling from chains. They hold a variety of light styles including spotlights, mini-lanterns, and much more.
No matter what style you prefer for your dining room, there is a light that will make the area warm and inviting. A stand out light can transform the whole room!
This is my last post on ways you can spruce up and enhance the outdoor living space at your home. Warmer days are on the way and spending outside in your yard is a fantastic way to sit back and unwind at the end of the day. Here are some tips to help get your outdoor space ready for summer.
Gazebos are a beautiful addition to any backyard space. They add unique style but also allow you to have a covered space perfect for entertaining. It’s easy to build a gazebo as an extension to your deck in order to offer some shelter and shade, or you could consider having a paved walkway to a separate, free-standing gazebo for some ambiance. Put out some comfortable furniture and a table for eating, some potted plants around the area for a pop of color…and you’re set!
Planting trees in your yard is not only a great way to add beauty and personality to the space, but also wonderful for the environment. As the trees grow, they will also add shade and privacy to your yard for years to come. There are many tree varieties out there, so do your research on which ones will work best for what you are trying to accomplish—size, height, sunlight requirements are important. Remember, as they grow, trees can send out a root system that could disrupt sidewalks, patios, walls, or other plants.
3) Water Features:
If you love the sound of water and the beauty of water features available, adding a water feature to your outdoor area is a great way to enhance it. Consider adding a couple of bird baths throughout your front and back yard areas, or if you’re looking for something a little bit larger and more involved to add some tranquillity, consider adding a pond or running fountain. These are beautiful and a great way to make your yard more appealing.
4) Let There Be Light:
Love being outside on those longer days of summer? Then make sure the setting sun won’t put a damper on any of your outdoor activities by adding lights throughout the backyard. Ground lights around walkways, patios, and decks are great places to start, or get a little more creative and hang string light bulbs around certain areas for focus. If there are places on your deck or patio that could benefit from installing additional light features on the outside walls of the home, consider doing that so you’ll never be left in the dark while relaxing and entertaining outside.
The details of your outdoor space do matter and will allow you to get outside more and breathe the fresh air. It doesn’t take a huge budget to get things looking great!
